How Often Should You Add Salt to the Water Softener Tank?

How Often Should You Add Salt to the Water Softener Tank?

Checking your softener’s brine tank should be done at least once each month if you own a water softener because this is the only way you can ensure that you have enough salt.

Checking your softener’s brine tank should be done at least once each month if you own a water softener because this is the only way you can ensure that you have enough salt. It is recommended that the level of salt be three to four inches above the water level in your tank but the amount of salt you’ll need to add will depend on two things; the quantity of water that your household consumes and the level of hardness in your water.

It’s very common to wonder how often and how much salt a softener tank should go through because, sometimes, it can feel as though you just added salt to the tank and somehow its already time to add more. Before you start questioning whether or not your softener tank is working properly, there are a few things you should consider, which can put it all into perspective.

According to industry standards, the average family of four will use roughly about nine to ten pounds of salt every week or a 40lbs bag of salt for the entire month if they have hard water, which is seven to ten grains per gallon in hardness level. While this is the industry standard for salt usage, you must remember that most of the water softening systems can be adjusted to use more or less salt on a monthly basis.

The way to calculate when it will need to regenerate again is by taking into account the amount of salt used for each regeneration cycle, which will determine the amount of water that can be softened before starting the cycle again.

There are two ways to go about it; either increase the amount of salt for each regeneration cycle and decrease the number of regeneration cycles over time or decrease the amount of salt for each regeneration cycle and increase the number of regeneration cycles over time. If you notice that the salt in your tank is dissolving a lot faster than before, it may be because you’re using a different type of salt. Changing the salt can affect the way your tank will react to it
because some salt types are denser than others. You may be able to change the settings and adjust it to the type of salt that is being used, so check the owner’s manual to see if that’s a possibility.

The good news is that the valve control featured on many water softeners will complete the calculations for you so you’ll know exactly when to regenerate at which time you’ll simply have to add more salt as it gets used up.
